Opinion: Making America Gated Again - India should know Trump means tariffs
India TodayIf there’s one tool that Donald Trump loves to use against other countries, it’s tariffs. The president-elect telegraphed his intention to impose tariffs on any and every country throughout the election campaign, so no one should be surprised that Trump announced he would impose tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China on Day 1 unless they took steps to stop illegal migrants and drugs from coming into the United States. Trump’s Trade Playbook: Key Partners Brace for Impact If Trump is swinging at America’s three largest trading partners, one can only imagine the fate of smaller fish in the years to come – unless they use the time between now and the first few months of 2025 to develop plans to make counter offers or retaliate or find a third way. Trump’s tariff plan would drive a knife through the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade that he negotiated in his first term to replace Bill Clinton’s North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA. Here’s the catch – nearly 77 per cent of Canadian exports come to the US, as do 84 per cent of Mexican exports, which gives Trump substantial leverage in the eyes of some economists.
