Proud Boys members must face January 6 charges, US judge rules
Al JazeeraCase against four members of far-right group is focus of the US Justice Department’s sprawling probe into Capitol riot. A United States judge has denied a motion by four leaders of the Proud Boys far-right group to dismiss federal criminal charges stemming from the January 6 attack on the US Capitol building. “Defendants are not, as they argue, charged with anything like burning flags, wearing black armbands, or participating in mere sit-ins or protests.” The case against the four men is a focus of the US Justice Department’s sprawling investigation of the insurrection on January 6, 2021, when a group of former US President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol building. More than three dozen people charged in the Capitol siege have been identified by federal authorities as Proud Boys leaders, members or associates, including at least 16 defendants charged with conspiracy. On the morning of January 6, Proud Boys members met at the Washington Monument and marched to the Capitol before Trump had finished addressing thousands of supporters near the White House.
