They Found Something Called the “Doomsday Fish” but It’s Probably Fine

What a week it’s been! Mmm, here’s something: She Went for a Walk on the Beach and Found a Rare “Doomsday Fish” Well, that doesn’t sound great. And speaking of harbingers of doom, here’s a paragraph from a Talking Points Memo story about secretary of defense nominee Pete Hegseth, a 44-year-old Fox News personality with no significant leadership experience who has been married three times and was accused of sexually assaulting a woman he met at a conference in 2017. Hegseth’s upper body is covered in tattooed symbols that are commonly used in right-wing “patriot” or “Christian nationalist” circles, including one that refers to the year 1775, which may be a reference to the necessity of fighting a war against the American left: TPM reached out to Hegseth on Wednesday to ask about the tattoo and his position on the Pentagon’s measures to address “patriot extremism” in the armed forces. “1775 is the Army Birthday,” definitely-not-Pete-Hegseth, who will possibly soon be in charge of the world’s most deadly military force, wrote to a reporter.
