Spectre of irrigation scam returns to haunt Ajit Pawar after BJP whistle-blower crank up pressure
The HinduWith a number of top leaders in the erstwhile Uddhav Thackeray-led ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ government under the scanner of central agencies, the ruling BJP is cranking up the pressure on senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar - the current Leader of Opposition - by threatening to reopen investigations into the alleged multi-crore 2012 irrigation scam. In tandem with the BJP’s pressure, former Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department Vijay Pandhare, a whistle-blower and key accuser of Mr. Pawar in the irrigation scam, on Friday said that the NCP leader had never been probed thoroughly in these 10 years. Incidentally, Mr. Pawar, in some sense had been given a ‘clean chit’ by the BJP when former Anti-Corruption Bureau head Parambir Singh had submitted a closing report in the Bombay High Court on the very first day of the short-lived government that BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis formed with Mr. Pawar in late 2019, with both leaders startling Maharashtra with their early morning swearing-in ceremonies as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively. However, barely three months after he resigned, Mr. Pawar was ‘reinstated’ as Deputy Chief Minister in late 2012 after a government White Paper on irrigation projects gave him a clean chit.
