Oscars 2022 and Twitter introduce new fan-voted awards, winners to be revealed during broadcast
India TodayAhead of the 94th Academy Awards, Twitter users will get to vote for their favourite film by using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite. According to the report by The Hollywood Reporter, “Three Twitter users who cast their votes during the February 14 to March 3 period, will be selected along with their guests to have an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to present an Oscar award at the following ceremony in 2023.” Meryl Johnson, VP of digital marketing at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “We’re thrilled to partner with Twitter to help build an engaged and excited digital audience leading up to this year’s ceremony. Through these activations, social media users around the world now have more opportunities to engage with the show in real time, find a community and be a part of the experience in ways they’ve never been able to before.” FILM SELECTED BY TWITTER USERS WON’T BE A FORMAL OSCARS CATEGORY This is not the first time that the Academy made efforts to encourage more mainstream moviegoers to watch the ceremony and boost ratings. If we look at the positive side, though the fan-favourite film voted by Twitter users won’t be a formal Oscars category, it sure will give movie buffs the opportunity to weigh in with their opinions.
