Al JazeeraVenezuela will hold parliamentary elections on Sunday to decide the makeup of the National Assembly, the only government branch controlled by opposition parties in the deeply divided South American country. Opposition leader and National Assembly Speaker Juan Guaido, Venezuela’s self-proclaimed interim president and an opponent of President Nicolas Maduro, has announced a boycott of the vote. “They now can engage in negotiations that involve Venezuela’s natural resources, and that will impact Venezuela’s economy, as those negotiations will now be honoured by the National Assembly.” The National Assembly can also approve public budgets and international agreements, and appoint public powers such as National Electoral Council rectors and Supreme Court judges. “When you say that you’ll recognise Guaido until the end of Maduro’s time in power, how long do you mean?” Luis Vicente Leon, president of the Caracas-based polling firm Datanalisis, said.
