Liverpool City Council loses legal bid to stop investigation into operations after allegations of 'maladministration'

A south-west Sydney council facing allegations of "maladministration and/or corruption" has lost its court bid to stop the New South Wales government from launching a public inquiry into its operations. The Land and Environment court ruled in favour of Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig on Monday afternoon, affirming his powers to investigate Liverpool City Council and clearing the way for him to suspend its councillors. Justice John Robson said the minister could exercise his powers from Thursday, September 5, including appointing an administrator and delaying council's election — giving the council a chance to review its options for appeal." The proceedings focused on the validity of an Office of Local Government interim report that looked into the council's hiring practices, but also allegedly identified "serious concerns about widespread dysfunction and maladministration".
