US Naval officer makes stunning discovery using Hubble telescope
India TodayThe open sky with its innumerable stars and constellations have long been used as a natural tool for navigation long before the GPS became a reality. An aspiring naval officer Olivia Achenbach from the United States Naval Academy has unveiled surprising characteristics of one such quasar, J0742+2704, using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Astronomer Kristina Nyland, Achenbach’s research advisor at the Naval Research Laboratory, emphasised the rarity of finding a quasar-hosting galaxy with spiral arms and a black hole more than 400 million times the mass of the Sun. The quasar J0742+2704 contributes to ongoing debates within the astronomy community regarding the origins of quasar jets, which play a crucial role in galaxy evolution by suppressing star formation. Nyland remarked, "While the quasar has not experienced a major disruptive merger, it may be interacting with another galaxy, which is gravitationally tugging at its spiral arm."
