Biological sex 'not as binary as often presented', says Jo Swinson
The TelegraphJo Swinson has said biological sex is “not as binary as is often presented”. Asked to explain her views on the nature of gender, the Liberal Democrat leader told Today: “This is not a scientific debate; this is a debate about people and their lives.” Ms Swinson also said men who have transitioned to become women should be granted access to female-only spaces, such as refuges, despite safety concerns from some women’s groups. The party’s manifesto calls for the removal of the current legal requirement for a medical report before a person can legally change sex, as well as recognition of “non-binary” gender identities. However, Ms Swinson said: “All women who are on the receiving end of violence deserve to have safe spaces, whether they are gay, straight or bi, whether they are trans, whether they are cis.” She added: “I’m not going to suggest that there aren’t individual cases who are trying to game the system, but I am suggesting there are genuine groups of people in our society who are very vulnerable and are being demonised, and that’s not right.”
