In a statement to the ABC, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said: "The Foreign Minister uses all appropriate opportunities to advocate for Professor Turnell's release, particularly among ASEAN colleagues." He said it was a "significant" development that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen had asked for Professor Turnell to be released at request of the Australian government. Janelle Saffin, a Labor MP in NSW state parliament with a long-standing interest in Myanmar, said Professor Turnell was an "innocent victim" of circumstance, with his case widely seen as tied to Ms Suu Kyi's.
