How Bournemouth’s new faces are shaping up as an Irish gem is unearthed
New York TimesTo say it has been a whirlwind summer for Gavin Kilkenny would be an understatement. The Irish 19-year-old was at Bournemouth’s under-21 training camp near La Manga in Spain when manager Eddie Howe asked him to come and train with his first-team players just down the coast. And while many fans turned up at the Vitality Stadium hoping to see new signings Philip Billing and Arnaut Danjuma impress against Lyon, they left talking about the young midfielder his team-mates are calling ‘Iniesta’. He joined Bournemouth after impressing on trial as a 16-year-old and with injuries to Dan Gosling and Andrew Surman leaving Howe short of bodies earlier in the summer, Kilkenny played in the club’s first UK friendly, a 3-1 win away to Brentford. But that was against a Championship opposition and if Stacey, one of the central figures in Luton’s League One promotion campaign last season, was in any doubt about the enormity of the step up from the third tier to the Premier League, those 90 minutes against Lazio will prove a timely reminder.
