Scientists who have successfully hatched one of the species' eggs in captivity hope a breeding program can be established, but they are also calling for Macquarie Harbour to be remediated It's not an alien, but this species does survive in a "bizarre habitat", researchers say. The Maugean skate — a species of ray — has evolved to live only in Macquarie Harbour, on Tasmania's west coast, near the small tourist town of Strahan. "If you're going to ensure the species continues in the wild, you need to have remediation of Macquarie Harbour because there's been environmental change in that site," he said. A Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania spokesperson said the Maugean skate recovery team was "already taking action" by "setting a Total Permissible Dissolved Nitrogen Output for Macquarie Harbour and imposing interim measures to minimise interactions between recreational and commercial fishers and the Maugean skate, with rules applicable to the fishery currently under review".
