UGC's new rules will ease foreign degree recognition in India | Explained
The University Grants Commission has notified fresh regulations to make it easier for Indian students to get their foreign academic qualifications recognised in India. WHAT THE NEW UGC RULES SAY The new UGC regulations introduce an online system for granting equivalence certificates to foreign degrees. HOW EQUIVALENCE IS DECIDED Equivalence will be granted based on several factors: Whether the foreign institution is officially recognised in its home country Duration and structure of the programme Entry requirements and level of study Type of courses covered Credit load and learning hours How the student was assessed — for example, through internships, thesis, or projects How the qualification compares with Indian programmes UGC CHAIRPERSON EXPLAINS WHY THIS MATTERS UGC Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said the move is in line with the National Education Policy 2020’s vision. These changes also apply to school-level foreign qualifications, making it easier for students returning from abroad after secondary education to seek admission in Indian colleges.
