HC initiates suo motu proceedings on pollution of Vaigai river in five districts
The HinduAfter expressing concern earlier this week over Tamirabharani river being polluted right from the source, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday initiated suo motu proceedings, taking cognisance of news reports, on pollution of the Vaigai. Swaminathan and B. Pugalendhi ordered notices to the District Collectors of Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts, Madurai Corporation Commissioner, Regional Director of Municipal Administration, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Madurai Nature Cultural Foundation. The Registrar of the Madurai Bench said the court had taken cognisance of the news reports on contamination of and waste discharge into Vaigai river in Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts. The petitioner, an advocate, relying on the study conducted by the Foundation, had sought a direction to the authorities to constitute a special committee to conduct an inspection of the places where sewage was let into Vaigai river and prevent the flow of sewage, untreated waste and drainage.
