Read our privacy policy With all areas of mainland England now under tier 3 or 4 restrictions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, a new national lockdown looks increasingly likely as cases continue to rise. Prime minister Boris Johnson told the BBC’s Andrew Marr on 3 January that measures were “probably about to get tougher” and said he was “reconciled to doing what it takes to get the virus down”, prompting Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to urge him not to delay in announcing a third lockdown. “We can't allow the prime minister to use up the next two or three weeks and then bring in a national lockdown which is inevitable.” As it stands, three-quarters of England are living under “stay at home” tier 4 restrictions - including the Midlands, North East, parts of the North West and parts of the South West.
