Proposed buffer zone around Peruvannamuzhi reservoir triggers protests in Kozhikode
A recent order issued by the Irrigation department to create a buffer zone around the Peruvannamuzhi reservoir has triggered widespread protests from local residents, farmers’ organisations, and political parties in Kozhikode district. As the reservoir area spans around 2,500 acres, residents fear that the new buffer zone regulation will impact all future construction and building projects on private land in the two panchayats. According to them, new eco-tourism initiatives proposed under the Responsible Tourism Initiative in areas like Thonikkadavu, Kariyathumpara, and Kakkayam will never take off with the heightened regulations under the buffer zone. Meanwhile, Irrigation department sources said that they have received instructions from higher authorities to proceed with land survey work to demarcate the new buffer zone, based on an official order issued by the Additional Chief Secretary on December 26, 2024.
