Court seeks Ram Rahim's reply on CBI plea against acquittal in 2002 murder case
India TodayThe Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine the Central Bureau of Investigation's appeal challenging the acquittal of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others in the 2002 murder of Ranjit Singh, a former manager of the sect. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna issued notices to the five acquitted individuals, including Ram Rahim, and directed the matter to be heard by Justice Bela M Trivedi’s bench, which is already hearing a related petition filed by the deceased’s father. While a special CBI court in Panchkula convicted Ram Rahim and his associates in October 2021, sentencing them to life imprisonment, the high court overturned the decision, prompting the CBI to move the top court. Ram Rahim, who is already serving a 20-year sentence for raping two of his disciples and a life term for journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati's murder, is currently lodged in Sunaria Jail, Haryana.
