I'm condemned by other mums for three 'unholy trinity' choices I made. But I have NO regrets - save the criticism I've faced: KATE DODDS
Daily MailThe other day I was chatting to a fellow school mum when she pulled such an anguished expression I thought she was in pain. Only-child families are predicted to make up 50 per cent of all families in the UK within the next seven years If I pressed the buzzer next to my bed to politely ask for formula milk when my tiny son cried to be fed, they'd insist they were too busy and that I must shuffle down the corridor to the reception desk to get it myself. It's high time such mothers get used to one-child families, because according to the Office for National Statistics, there were 3.7 million of us in Britain in 2023 – an increase of 16 per cent versus 3.2 million two decades ago. I won't lie, as the years go by I do get pangs about the fact that my son doesn't have siblings – especially as I'm so close to my own brother and sister. Although my husband and I made the decision because of our ages and certain genetic health risks in my family, and those reasons still stand, I can't help but feel wistful about what it would've been like to have a whole brood.
