Taiwan looks to export pineapples to Australia, as China ban bites

Taiwan looks for new markets In late February, China abruptly banned pineapple imports from Taiwan citing biosecurity concerns, putting the industry in Taiwan under a lot of pressure to find alternative markets. Last year, Taiwan exported more than 41,000 tonnes of pineapples to China, worth US$52.64 million and accounting for 91 per cent of Taiwan's total pineapple exports, according to the Taipei Times. On Twitter, Taiwan's Vice President, Lai Ching-te, wrote that pineapples once purchased by China would now go towards domestic use "and orders from Japan, Australia, Singapore, Vietnam and Middle East countries".
