Toyota chief says ‘silent majority’ has doubts about pursuing only EVs

Live Mint

Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda said he represented a silent majority of auto-industry people who are questioning whether electric vehicles should be pursued exclusively as the future of cars. “People involved in the auto industry are largely a silent majority," Mr. Toyoda said Sunday to reporters in Buriram, a small agricultural town 190 miles northeast of Bangkok. “Because the right answer is still unclear, we shouldn’t limit ourselves to just one option," said Mr. Toyoda, who was visiting Thailand to mark the 60th anniversary of Toyota’s business in the country. With many governments moving to subsidize and mandate sales of EVs, auto makers have been nudged into competing over EV sales targets, Mr. Toyoda said.
