
Detailed Project Report for redevelopment of Kumbakonam station sent to Railway Board
The HinduSouthern Railway has submitted the Detailed Project Report for the redevelopment of the Kumbakonam railway station to the Railway Board, New Delhi, for sanction. The Deputy Chief Engineer/II/Gauge Conversion, Tiruchi, of the Southern Railway, gave this information in his reply on January 22 to an application filed by a Kumbakonam-based resident under the Right to Information Act 2005. Rail users in Kumbakonam have called for sanction to the project with allocation of adequate funds to enable early commencement of work so that the revamped station could be ready well before the ‘Mahamaham’ in Kumbakonam in 2028, said A. Giri, secretary, Thanjavur District Railway Users’ Association. Mr. Giri said rail users in the delta region were expecting approval for revival of the railway line between Mayiladuthurai and Tharangambadi with extension up to Tirunallar and allocation of funds for the new line from Thiruthuraipoondi to Nagapattinam via Thirukuvalai for its early completion.
