Why the Packers seem likely to stay quiet at this year’s NFL trade deadline
New York TimesThe Athletic has live coverage of the NFL trade deadline including the latest deals, rumors and analysis. Even if the Packers find themselves in playoff contention around this year’s trade deadline, only someone living in fantasy land would tell you they’re one or two pieces away from contending for a Lombardi Trophy. Given Gutekunst’s intention to use this season as the first chapter of the future in Green Bay rather than the last chapter of a chips-all-in mentality, he’s unlikely to deal future draft capital that will be valuable in this “rebuild” for a big name who could help in the immediate more than a current Packer. And a bigger splash, one a Super Bowl-contending team like the Eagles made this week in trading for Titans All-Pro safety Kevin Byard, wouldn’t make sense for a team as far away from title contention as the Packers because of what it would take to get that player. Green Bay would fall to 2-5, still mathematically in the hunt but realistically out of it since the first half of the season was supposed to be the far easier part of the Packers’ schedule.
