Does COVID-19 have a link with the eyes?
The HinduWe ophthalmologists are used to the red/pink eye, called Madras Eye, which is a viral conjunctivitis caused by Adenovirus. COVID-19 also spreads from droplet source, and has respiratory symptoms such as breathlessness which is not in the case of adenoviral infections. Those affected experience symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath or conjunctivitis, which can appear between two to 14 days, after being exposed to the virus. A recent study of hospitals across China, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found “conjunctival congestion” or red, infected eyes in nine of 1,099 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. Patients typically present with respiratory illness, including fever, cough and shortness of breath; conjunctivitis has also been reported.
