Victoria's new public drunkenness laws blamed for death of a man hit by car in Wyndham Vale

ABC

In short: A man is dead after being hit by a car outside his house in Wyndham Vale, in Melbourne's south-west, early on Friday morning. The head of the union representing Victorian police officers says a man killed after being hit by a car in Melbourne's west would still be alive today if Victoria did not have what he has described as "reckless" public drunkenness laws. "On behalf of the Police Association and its nearly 18,000 members, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the family," Mr Gatt said. Mr Gatt said he had spent three years since the reforms were first proposed "begging" for officers faced with a situation like Wyndham Vale to be allowed to take an intoxicated person to a police station until staff from a sobering up centre could attend. "It's tragic, unnecessary and entirely preventable" Mr Gatt called on the state government to introduce urgent changes to help police keep the community safe.
