Casuarina Prison guard accused of assaulting teen in notorious Unit 18 stands trial

ABC

A WA prison guard has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a juvenile detainee during a riot in the notorious Unit 18 facility at Casuarina Prison last year. Ryan then started to swear, Mr Ratten said, and so he "ushered" him away with his hand out of fear he would spit on him. Another Casuarina prison officer, Lawrence Brickland, gave evidence in support of Mr Ratten, saying he was the one who yelled "watch out" when he saw an officer escorting another detainee trip over. He said the detainees were "there to be seen" despite Mr Ratten's evidence he did not fully see them until being startled by Ryan walking towards him. There was "no reason for him to lift his knee in the manner he did," Senior Constable Steenkamp said, adding that even after the incident Mr Ratten "remains standing exactly where he was".
