How women voters are changing the political script across states, one at a time

There was a trend reversal of sorts in the 2016 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Data shows women’s turnout witnessed a 36 per cent growth in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections compared to 2009 and this was followed by an additional growth of 13 per cent in 2019. In Uttar Pradesh, for instance, 40 per cent more men voted than women in the 2007 assembly elections. As a result, the gap between men and women voters reduced from 12 per cent in 2006 to 10 per cent in 2011. In the 2016 assembly elections in Assam, the gap between men and women voters reduced to just 7 per cent, from nearly 10 per cent in 2011.
