Govt shells crores to bring rich back, makes poor Indians pay: Migrants closer to home, yet so far
India TodayAs soon as the coronavirus pandemic struck, India took no time to rescue its citizens from Covid-19 hotspots around the world, operating special flights to bring back those stranded in foreign countries. After the first 40 days of the lockdown was over, on May Day, the government finally decided to start operating “Shramik Special” trains to move the migrant workers to their home states. While the Kerala government asked the poor labourers to pay the base fare of Rs 875 for being ferried to Jharkhand, special trains that left Maharashtra for different states also charged migrant workers the basic fare. If we had money, what was the need for us to go back?” Another migrant worker from Nasik said, “This government can shell out crores to bring back rich Indians who were stranded in foreign countries but they do not have money to send the poorest and the most hardworking lot of their country to their homes. On Sunday, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also hit out at the central and state governments for charging money to bring back poor migrant workers in special trains.
