PM Modi's Vaccine Maitri may have been an ill-planned publicity event, but it's time for Vaccine Maitri 2.0 | OPINION
India Today"Only small men discriminate saying: One is a relative; the other is a stranger. - Vasudhaiva Kutubakam, Maha Upanishad by Dr. AG Krishna Warrier In the spirit of PM Narendra Modi's underlying theme of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam in his foreign policy approach, India rolled out its vaccination drive in January this year and almost simultaneously initiated 'Vaccine Maitri' under which a total of 6.6 crore vaccine doses were sent to 95 countries. Due to an ill-planned vaccine procurement strategy, India was forced to put on hold the vaccine exports leading to a severe impact on 91 nations dependent on Indian vaccines. India should have stockpiled enough vaccines for the nation, but the government didn't because it believed that Covid was in its endgame and, as vaccine manufacturers, we may not need the vaccines we make. It is time for India to unleash its capacities -- take up vaccination in the country on a war footing by procuring more vaccines, building more capacities by invoking the Compulsory License Act, and inviting global vaccine manufacturers to make in India.
