Bank of England holds interest rates steady for first time in two years

The Telegraph

The Bank of England has ended a run of 14 successive interest rate increases in a move that has raised hopes borrowing costs may have peaked. The Monetary Policy Committee voted to hold interest rates at 5.25pc in a knife-edge decision that split policymakers almost down the middle. Five members of the nine-strong Monetary Policy Committee, including Governor Andrew Bailey, voted to keep rates unchanged for the first time in two years. This group, which included Deputy Governor Sir Jon Cunliffe, wanted higher borrowing costs on the basis there was “evidence of more persistent inflationary pressures”, pointing to the fact that “consumer sentiment appeared to be holding up real household incomes had started to rise”.
