New income gap report advocates for universal income. Will govt warm up to the idea?
India TodayWith the poor getting marginalised further, the gap between the top-most and the bottom-most incomes widening, and the income share held by the top 1% is increasing, the idea of raising minimum income and introducing a universal basic income seems to be inching towards the government's drawing board. Extrapolating Periodic Labour Force Survey income data from 2019-20, the report says that a monthly salary of Rs 25,000 is already amongst the top 10% of total incomes earned, pointing towards some levels of income disparity. The inequality report says that measures like universal basic income can reduce the income gap and ensure equal distribution of earnings in the labour market. READ | Explained: Why India’s unemployment rate is rising sharply despite economic recovery TOP 1% In a very detailed study of income bands, the report says that according to the Annual Report of the Periodic Labour Force Survey 2019- 20, the annual cumulative wages came to be around Rs 18,69,91,00,000, out of which the top 1% earned nearly Rs 1,27,48,00,000, and the bottom 10% accounted for Rs 32,10,00,000 indicating that the top 1% earns almost three times as much as the bottom 10%.
