Can anyone outdo Caitlin Clark for women’s college basketball player of the year?
New York TimesThe Top 25 was fairly static this week as teams took time off for holiday breaks and ended their nonconference schedules on a light note. As a reminder, the preseason AP All-American team included Caitlin Clark — last year’s player of the year — as well as Cameron Brink, Paige Bueckers, Elizabeth Kitley, Mackenzie Holmes and Angel Reese. The main factor working against Brink is that she’s averaging 22 minutes per game, over 10 fewer than Clark. Pili is second behind Brink in win shares per 40 minutes and also plays fewer minutes than some of the country’s perimeter stars due to foul trouble, but her offensive production is near historic. She’s third in the country in points per game, fifth in win shares per 40 minutes, second in defensive rating and first — by a significant margin — in steals.
