More sharks detected at Adelaide beaches but expert says most are not dangerous

More sharks than usual have been detected off Adelaide's coastline so far this spring and summer, prompting a warning for beachgoers. Key points: More than 150 sharks have been detected off Adelaide's coastline since October Beaches are patrolled by helicopter, aeroplane and surf life savers Most sharks seen near the city are not dangerous to humans Warm weather over the past week has seen more swimmers flock to metropolitan beaches. Surf Life Saving South Australia has detected 13 per cent more sharks since October than in the same three-month period last year. A total of 155 sharks were seen from the service's helicopter — as well as by the shark-spotter aeroplane and by beach patrols — 18 more than last year. "The movement and the behaviour of the sharks can also affect the likelihood of seeing these sharks, so we know from some of the tagging studies that have been undertaken that sharks are more likely to be seen and come in the South Australian gulf around the spring and summer period," Associate Professor Huveneers said.
