Voting starts in three-day Dutch election dominated by COVID-19
Al JazeeraIncumbent Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s VVD party is widely expected to take the most votes, securing him a fourth term in office. With a ban on public gatherings, the election campaign focused on a series of televised debates in which incumbent Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who first took office in 2010 and has since become one of Europe’s longest-serving leaders, maintained his image as a steady hand during a time of crisis. Four polls released this week showed the 54-year-old’s conservative People’s Party of Freedom and Democracy, or VVD, taking 21-26 percent of the vote, compared with 11-16 percent for its closest rival, Geert Wilders’ anti-Islam Freedom Party, which leads the parliamentary opposition. His government has been in caretaker mode since January when it resigned over a scandal involving tax officials seeking to root out fraud wrongly targeting families, plunging thousands into debt.
