UN secretary-general calls on major polluters to show leadership in cutting emissions to prevent Pacific climate catastrophe
ABCUnited Nations secretary-general António Guterres has implored major polluters and developed nations such as Australia to rapidly cut emissions and phase out coal and gas after meeting Pacific leaders in Tonga, warning the region is on the brink of climate catastrophe. But Pacific climate groups and some Pacific politicians have sharply criticised Australia's climate track record, saying the federal government must stop expanding fossil fuel extraction and exports if the meeting is to have any credibility. On Monday, Tuvalu's climate change minister said developed nations and major polluters had to take drastic action to cut emissions and help Pacific nations survive. Last year, for example, Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said while the Pacific would like all large economies to show more urgency on climate change, Fiji was "realistic" about how fast Australia could phase out fossil fuel exports.
