Kerala sees trend of increasing summer rain fuelled by rise in average temperature

Summer monsoon, influenced by the change in temperature patterns and often characterised by heavy and short-lived intense spells accompanied by thunders, has been increasing in Kerala triggered by a rise in average temperatures. According to the climatological data available with the India Meteorological Department, the summer rain has been witnessing an increasing trend in the past 50 years, triggering concerns of increased average temperature in the State. Kerala used to get around 359.1 mm of rain during the summer period as per the long-period average and the general trend in the last 50 years has been increasing. For instance, for every 1 °C increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold approximately 7% more water in the form of vapour, leading to intense spells during the summer, said Manoj M. G., scientist with the Cochin University of Science and Technology’s Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research.
