Govt blinks, offers to defer farm laws
Live MintThe Central government, under intense pressure from farmers, has offered to suspend the three contentious farm laws for as long as 18 months to end the protests at Delhi’s doorstep. The government also proposed to constitute a committee to review the laws and continue the dialogue with farmer unions. “I am hopeful of reaching a solution by the next meeting on Friday,” Tomar said, adding, “It will be a victory of Indian democracy when the agitation ends and farmers return to their villages.” The government offered to suspend the implementation of the three laws for up to 18 months or a mutually agreeable period of time to restore the trust of farmer unions, and they are willing to do this through an affidavit in the Supreme Court, said Kavitha Kuruganti, who is part of the 41-member delegation of Samyukta Kisan Morcha that is negotiating with the government. Protesting farmer unions refused to present their views before the committee and argued that they will only hold a dialogue with the government, which has the powers to repeal the laws.
