Vinyl, Kodak and the Nokia 3310: Why retro gadgets are making a comeback

Whenever pessimists say life has stopped improving, or is even going backwards, the easiest counter-argument is the rapid advance of technology. The smartphones in our pockets are many times more powerful than those that put a man on the moon, and for a couple of hundred pounds you can get technology that would have been out of touch to everyone but millionaires three decades ago. Political parties and economies go up and down, fashion and culture trends go full circle after a few years, but technology is supposed to be different: companies build on the progress of previous years to create ever more powerful, more efficient and cheaper gadgets. And next week, if rumours are to believed, will see the return of the Nokia 3310, the iconic handset that in comparison to today’s smartphones, is a child’s toy.
