Now, a robotic device to perform laparoscopic surgery

The Hindu

Kozhikode: A city-based hospital has claimed to have successfully conducted a robotic laparoscopic urological surgery on a 70-year-old patient recently. Harigovind Pothiyedath, head of the department of Metromed Institute of Advanced Urology and Renal Transplant, told reporters here on Tuesday that surgeons earlier had to cut the ribs and the abdomen of patients to perform surgeries. “Laparoscopic surgeries and robot-assisted laparoscopy have turned them into simple procedures,” he said, adding that such a robotic surgery was being conducted for the first time in Asia. Krishnamohan, urologist, said the surgeon controls the movements of the robotic device.
