Mexico charges cops with trying to kill CIA agents

MEXICO CITY — Mexican prosecutors charged 14 federal police officers Friday with trying to kill two CIA agents and a Mexican navy captain in an August ambush south of the capital. Later, however, U.S. and Mexican officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said they were leaning toward the idea that it was a targeted attack masterminded by a drug cartel. An official with the Attorney General’s Office said the police officers were on duty at the time of the shooting and required to be wearing uniforms and driving official vehicles. Homicide and attempted homicide charges are usually state crimes in Mexico, but the Mexican official said this was a more serious case because the suspects were federal police.
