‘Broadband’ definition officially changed as internet speeds get faster

The changes will help ensure that more people have faster connections, the FCC said, in line with a commitment to give everyone high-speed broadband. Announcing the change, FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said the “fix is overdue”. The commission also adopted a “long-term goal” of 1Gbps down and 500Mbps up, Ms Rosenworcel said. Ms Rosenworcel said that some of the change had been made in response to the pandemic, which showed the extent of the “digital divide” in the US.
