Telcos ask govt. to remove import duties on telecom equipment

The Cellular Operators Association of India, which represents Bharti Airtel Ltd., Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Vodafone Idea Ltd., called on the Union government to scrap import duties on telecom equipment. “Until high-quality equipment is available domestically at competitive prices, we urge the government to reduce customs duties for 4G and 5G network products, as well as other related items, to,” the COAI said. “Lowering levy burdens and promoting investment opportunities for the TSPs are not just economic imperatives, but also strategic investments in the country’s future,” COAI director general Lt. Reduce levies The telecom industry body also called for a reduction in a series of levies applicable to the telecom sector: the 5% levy on adjusted gross revenue to fund the Digital Bharat Nidhi, earlier called the Universal Service Obligation Fund, should be abolished, COAI said, “till the existing USO corpus of over ₹86,000 Crore is exhausted.” The License Fee should also be reduced by two-thirds to 1%, the body said.
