Rural areas could be left with slow broadband for years after a 'litany' of errors

The Telegraph

Rural areas could be left with slow broadband for years due to a "litany" of failures in the Government’s plan to achieve high-speed coverage, a committee of MPs said. The Public Accounts Committee, which scrutinises public spending, said that the Conservative’s manifesto pledge to provide nationwide coverage of “gigabit” broadband by 2025 was unachievable and it feared hard-to-reach areas would be left behind. The promise has already been scaled down to providing 85 per cent coverage, but the PAC said it feared rural areas would not even have superfast connections by that date. The UK has one of the lowest rates of access to full-fibre internet in Europe and only 80 per cent of rural areas are covered by superfast broadband compared to 97 per cent of urban ones.
