Beyond the rings: When Hubble saw a 1,20,000-km-wide storm raging on Saturn
India TodayThe Hubble telescope has been our eyes not just beyond the Solar System, but also within for the last 34 years, and as Nasa celebrates its 35th anniversary, it has releases a breathtaking picture from its early days. In November 1990, Nasa’s Hubble Space Telescope documented a rare planetary spectacle — a massive storm dubbed the "Great White Spot" swirling around Saturn’s equator. Hubble’s Wide Field/Planetary Camera captured the event during eight orbits on November 17, 1990, producing a color-accurate movie showing one full Saturn rotation. Scientists from the White Spot Observing Team and NASA institutions prioritised these observations, temporarily halting Hubble’s schedule before Saturn’s proximity to the Sun made imaging unsafe. As Saturn’s next equatorial storm likely won’t occur before 2040, the 1990 event remains a pivotal case study in planetary atmospheric dynamics—a fleeting glimpse into the chaos beneath the ringed planet’s serene facade.
