“No religion supports any activity that promotes pollution or compromises with health of the people,” SC on firecracker ban
The HinduThe Supreme Court observed on Monday that religion does not encourage polluting activities like bursting firecrackers which affect the fundamental right to health of citizens. A bench headed by Justice A.S. Oka made the remark while recording the Delhi government’s delayed move to issue a firecracker ban in the national capital two days after Dussehra, on October 14, possibly allowing sellers and enthusiasts to stockpile ahead of Deepavali. On the court’s question of imposing a perpetual, year-long ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers, the Delhi government appeared non-committal, saying it had to consult with stakeholders. Stakeholders oppose ban “Who are these stakeholders?” Justice Oka asked the Delhi government counsel. “Anybody who claims they have a fundamental right to burst crackers and create pollution, let them come to court,” Justice Oka retorted.
