'Ridiculous and a little scary': Dem sounds alarm on GOP's 'cherry-picked' report
Raw StoryA Democratic insider who previously served as the January 6 Committee spokesperson fought back against a “cherry-picked” report by House Republicans that attempted to discredit the committee’s investigation – and targeted former Rep. Liz Cheney for retribution. Tim Mulvey, a former Democratic communications director, said singling out Cheney – and the GOP's threats to prosecute perceived political enemies – offer a preview of the “very dangerous path” ahead. “It's ridiculous and it's a little scary, but unfortunately it's not that much of a surprise,” Mulvey said during an appearance on CNN’s "OutFront.” He added that Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who released the report Tuesday, has regularly delivered a report “rehashing the same baseless allegations about the select committee.” “And each time he has some new cherry-picked piece of evidence that he wants to be some sort of smoking gun,” Mulvey told the show’s host, Erin Burnett. “But more broadly I think in the last couple of weeks, we've seen this troubling trend that the people who control the levers of power in government – or about to control the levers of power in government – seem to think that the justice system is there to exact political retribution on their enemies.” Mulvey gave as examples lawsuits against media outlets for unfavorable coverage, and attempts to criminalize congressional oversight of perceived political enemies.
