Former volleyball players speak up about 'environment of fear' at Australian Institute of Sport

In the late 1990s there was no place an aspiring Australian Olympic athlete would rather be than the Institute of Sport in Canberra. "It really did feel like the optimal environment for us to be in if we wanted to get as good as we could before the Olympic Games," Brett said. Brett said she first saw signs of what she described as Saindon's "aggression and volatility" on a tour to the US in 1997. Brett said Saindon's training method for players making mistakes was a common volleyball coaching drill known as a "coach-on-one". "There'd be girls on the ground exhausted and you could tell they couldn't get up," Scoble said.
