NT prison officers deliver no-confidence vote in Corrections Commissioner Matthew Varley

ABC

Northern Territory prison officers have returned a resounding no-confidence vote in the NT's corrections commissioner, amid pushback over a plan to hire private and interstate guards to help staff the workforce. The United Workers Union on Friday released the survey results of 519 correctional officers across the territory, which found 98 per cent of respondents had no confidence in Corrections Commissioner Matthew Varley. On Friday, about 20 correctional officers marched in Alice Springs to hand the results to the office of Treasurer Bill Yan, a former correctional officer and general manager of the Alice Springs prison. The territory's prison population has soared by more than 20 per cent — or 500 inmates — since the new Country Liberal Party government came to power in August and introduced a suite of new criminal offences and tougher bail laws.
