ConocoPhillips Australia gets approval to drill gas wells in Otway Basin

ABC

A multinational petroleum giant has received approval to drill up to six exploratory gas wells in the Otway Basin, near biologically important areas for protected marine species. Gas and oil exploration projects along Victoria's south-west coast have faced significant community pushback for years, with one of the largest seismic testing proposals on record pulled last year after months of community campaigning. Australian Marine Conservation Society oil and gas campaign manager Louise Morris said the statement signalled a "dire" outlook for the country's oceans. "It's beyond disappointing that in areas like the Southern Ocean, the Liberal Party wants to drill for gas, rather than harvest the wind," chief executive John Grimes said.
