March 2017 Carrie Lam, born in Hong Kong in 1957 and a lifelong civil servant, becomes the territory’s next chief executive, promising to unite a territory increasingly anxious about China’s tightening grip. March 2021 The National People’s Congress in Beijing approves changes to Hong Kong elections to ensure only “patriots” are able to run for office.
