The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear an appeal filed by the State of Tamil Nadu against a Madras High Court decision of acquitting prime accused in the 2016 'Udumalpet' Shankar murder case. On June 22, the Madras High Court had set aside the order of conviction passed by the Principal District and Sessions Court, Tiruppur, against B. Chinnasamy, the prime accused in the 2016 'Udumalpet' Shankar murder case, and ordered that he be released from custody forthwith. "The CRIMINAL APPEAL IS ALLOWED and the appellant/A1 is acquitted of all charges and the conviction and sentence imposed against the appellant/A1 by the learned Principal District and Sessions Judge, Tirupur, in SC.No.19 of 2016 dated 12.12.2017, for the offences under Sections 120, 302 r/w 120 r/w 109 IPC, 307 r/w 120 r/w 109 of IPC and under Sections 3 of SC/St Amendment Act, 2015 are set aside and he is acquitted of all charges levelled against him," the Madras HC had stated.
